What size is the screw that holds the valve wheel onto the valve on the sediment bowl? The original uses an screw. The cheap chines made bowls come with a 3mm screw for the valve wheel. It leaks in every way possible, and what a piece of junk. Im a machinist and ive never seen anything like this where every surface on it is out of alignment and off center from the rest of the diminsions.

Maanufacturer please put another dollar or 2 into these where they will actually do what we buy them for. Comments on older posts are moderated due to spam issues. And, if you've tried to replace the original sediment bowl with the currently available option, you may have realized that it is an utter and complete piece of crap. It leaks from everywhere that it possibly can, perhaps a few places it can't conceivably leak from, and it's quite unlikely that the fuel shutoff valve actually shuts off fuel.

Which, of course, is the whole point of a fuel shutoff valve. It looks like this, and I've managed to beat one into actually behaving, not leaking, and actually shutting off fuel - even though it didn't start by doing any of those things! If you've worked on a N series tractor or an awful lot of other older tractors recently, you'll recognize this sediment bowl.

Why do I care about this? It took far longer to get the stupid sediment bowl working as desired "not leaking"and was frustrating enough that I'd like to share my results in the desire that they help someone else avoid my frustration.

It's a stage in the fuel filtration process - consider it a settling tank for gas straight out of the tank. The gas flows from the tank into the bowl, letting the dirt and grit settle to the bottom of the bowl. The gas then flows up through a fine wire filter, with the clean gas flowing out of the top of the sediment bowl, ideally free of rust flakes and other material that could clog up a carburetor.

This is the primary fuel filter in old tractors, and it works tolerably well - the heaviest debris settles out, the smaller stuff gets caught in the filter and eventually settles outand stuff that makes it through and through the carburetor elbow filter is probably small enough to make it through a jet and into the engine with no ill effects.

Eventually, you get some sediment built up in the bottom of the bowl, then remove the fuel bowl and rinse it out. Repeat as needed. Beyond being a sediment bowl, this is the main fuel shutoff valve for the tractor. As shipped, neither of mine I ordered two from different suppliers and they both had the same issues were actually able to shut fuel off. He would bring them back home and begin to work on them in his shed. Russell Stevens then founded Stevens Tractor in Russell knew small farm equipment would be ideal for the weekend gardener or small farmer.

We began fabricating small farm equipment under the name Choctaw. Along with manufacture of the small farm equipment we also offered new finish mowers such as Big Bee, Landpride and Woods. We sold rotary cutters from many suppliers over the years such as Big Bee, International, Hico Howse, Sidewinder, Kodiak and many more.

Hay balers such as Vermeer and disc mowers such as Vicon and PZ were visible as you drove on highway 71 just north of Coushatta. Along with the tractors, small farm equipment and hay cutting equipment, we stayed very busy with tractor and equipment parts.

With the development of a major Interstate soon to come near our town, Mr. Stevens knew that traffic would soon slow down on highway This small town business would begin to develop a customer mailing list and mail out flyers offering tractor repair manuals for many brands of tractors including Allis Chalmers, Case, David Brown, Ford, International, John Deere and Massey Ferguson.

The mail order business continued to grow and we offered many parts for the Ford 9N, 2N and 8N such as engine overhaul kits, water pumps, radiators, brakes, tune up kits, manuals, filters, hydraulic parts, grills, fenders, seats and more. Not only the Ford tractors but also the Farmall and Internationals such as the Cub, and many more. The Stevens Ag Parts catalog was born and offered all the equipment, equipment parts, tractors and tractor parts. The original size of the tractor parts catalog was 11 x 14 and all the equipment and tractor parts images were cut out of books and pasted onto the pages then sent to the press.

Still offering tractor parts for the same brands of tractors, the Allis Chalmers, Ford, International, Farmall, John Deere, Massey Ferguson, Long and Zetor tractor parts would increase in variety and parts availability. We now offer parts for all the compact tractors such as the Hinomoto, Iseki, Mitsubishi, Bolens and Satoh.

The growing demand for compact tractor parts has been an area we have grown in obtaining engine parts, clutch kits, water pumps, hydraulics and steering parts for these hard to find compact tractors. Of course, Yanmar made the engines in the John Deere tractors for many years and we are still able to get most of those parts.

We offered a compact tractor parts catalog back inbut have not published another one since. The farm equipment and equipment parts catalog has also grown in variety of rotary cutter blades, bolts, tailwheels, tailwheel forks, gearboxes, drivelines, disc mower blades, belts, hay baler teeth, wheel rake teeth for many models such as John Deere, Gehl, Vermeer, Sitrex, Rossi, Tonutti, Otma, New Holland, Massey Ferguson, Deutz Fahr, PZ, Zweeger, Case, Ford, International, Pollard and others. The farm equipment catalog also offers sickle mower parts, sprayer parts such as Hypro pumps, Spray wands by Spraying systems Teejet, PTO sprayer kits and spot sprayer booms to name a few.

Gardening parts like cultivator sweeps, cultivator tines, disc hillers, disc hiller blades, cultivator clamps, cultivator parts for those old International cultivators, disc blades, disc axles, disc bearings for most size tandem and garden disc. Planter parts are included in the farm equipment catalog for models like the Covington TP46 planter, the Cole Powell 12 MX planter and the Multiflex planter.

Lastly, you will find a large variety of three point hitch parts in the farm equipment catalog such as top links, easy hitches, drawbars, pins, leveling boxes, stabilizer bars and arms, adjustable side links and PTO couplers, PTO adapters, and over running clutch or coupler parts. Stevens Tractor is in the business of keeping tractors and farm equipment moving forward on and off the field. Stevens tractor also offers Ford tractor parts for the, and the newer New Holland models. Our mission is to offer one of the most extensive collections of both common and hard-to-find tractor parts and farm equipment parts.

I have tried to search for fuel line size but could not find anything about it. I dont want to have to buy a special line if I can just make it. Thanks and have a good evening.

Reply With Quote. Re: Fuel Line on 51 8N I bought a 30" brake line at oreillys it has the correct ends on it just bend to fit. You could make your own if you have the flaring tool and ends. I will call the auto parts store in town to see if they have it.

Thank you.

How NOT to restore a Ford 8n tractor, part one (fuel)

The fittings fit the carburetor fitting and I'm figuring the other will fit the bowl. There is a sticker on the line that says, PA Re: Fuel Line on 51 8N I always do the brake line deal, clean n easy. Re: Fuel Line on 51 8N Do you ever put any dope on the fittings or anti-seize?

Re: Fuel Line on 51 8N i'd say that you'd have to be a dope to put dope on a flare fitting.Open the fuel valve two full turns for normal operation, and all the way out to get the remaining one-gallon reserve at the bottom of the tank along with whatever sludge and debris may have collected in the tank.

Honestly, using the reserve is just asking for trouble. There is supposed to be a screen around that reserve fuel port in the tank, but no way to verify it is there, and in good condition, without removing the entire fuel valve assembly.

It is highly recommended that you always close the fuel valve completely when you shut the tractor off for the day. This is a gravity-feed system, and the tank is above the engine. If the float in the carb does not seal, all of that fuel could end up in your engine. Especially if it has a couple of days to drain. The Ford 8N Tractor fuel system has three 3 screens. All three of those screens need to be clean for proper fuel flow.

A good way to test the system is to put a can under the carb, remove the large plug at the bottom of the carb, and then open the fuel valve on the tank. You should get a good steady stream of fuel after the carb drains. If the flow of fuel slows down significantly after what is in the carb is gone, start looking for the problem. As mentioned above, one screen is in the tank. You have to completly drain the fuel and remove the fuel shutoff valve assembly to clean that one.

Don't forget to also drain the reserve fuel supply by screwing the fuel shutoff knob all the way out.

If you don't, or that screen is badly clogged, you will still have about a gallon of fuel in the tank when you remove the fuel valve assembly. Ask me how I figured that out. Before starting this repair it might be a good idea to have a replacement fuel valve assembly. The old one can probably be cleaned, but a replacement will have your tractor ready to go again much faster. You can always rebuild the old one, and keep it as a spare.

A second screen is located just above the glass sediment bowl at the bottom of the fuel shutoff valve. Loosten the bottom nut, remove the glass jar, and the screen is above the seal. Before removing the glass bowl, it is a good idea to have a replacement gasket and filter to put in there. It might not be a bad idea to have a replacement glass bowl in case the old one gets dropped on your concrete floor.

The third screen is attached to the fuel inlet elbow on the carb. Remove the fuel line and unscrew the brass elbow to get to that one. It is made right on the end of the brass fuel line elbow adapter.

If any of the screens is clogged, look immediately upstream to find the source of the problem.

Usually the problem will be a dirty or badly corroded tank. Flushing and cleaning the tank may help, but if the problem is corrosion, you need to fix it or get a new tank. There are several tank repair products available that coat and seal the inside of the tank and may fix the problem. Make sure the coating is suitable for ethanol fuel if you run pump gas with ethanol.

When replacing taper-threaded fittings don't forget to use sealant on the threads or they will leak. The taper-threaded fittings on these tractors are actually NPTF. N ational P ipe T aper F ule fittings are different from regular pipe threads.

The fuel fittings are supposed to seal without using any sealant. That might work when new fittings are mated with new fittings. It often does not work with old fittings. We share many of these tips with enterprise software vendors to help them drive high-quality reviews on our site, G2Crowd.
